Is it illegal to buy prop money? Not when it is clearly marked and bought for a legitimate purpose such as a shoot, a stage show or training. The law is aimed at reproductions that could deceive someone into accepting them as real.
Three things keep a prop on the right side of the line: 1. **Marked as a reproduction.** Every PROPPS note carries SPECIMEN markings in line with Section 22 of the Crimes (Currency) Act 1981 and RBA reproduction guidelines. 2. **Never spent.** Prop notes are non-legal tender and must not be handed over as payment. 3. **Used for the right job.** Productions, photography, theatre and simulation training.
People often group prop notes with fake money in general, but the difference is intent and markings. If you want the full detail, our compliance page sets out the standard each note is held to.
